1. Why did Mrs. Fakhtory die at the end of “The Eternal Sphinx”? |
|
There are two reasons as to why Mrs. Fakhtory dies at the end of “The Eternal Sphinx”.
One was simply a mythological gag, where, according to mythology, a sphinx guarded the secret entrance to Thebes, and that in order to pass, one had to correctly answer a riddle. (Ironically, the riddle that Jason was asked in the book where “humans” posed as an answer… coincidence?) Legend had it that should the passerby answer correctly, the sphinx would throw herself into the air and die. This death could be considered synonymous with Mrs. Fakhtory’s.
In order to understand the second reason—more important to the books—you’ll have to understand that the sphinx had been parented by the Fakhtory mothers for many generations. It was a rule known by all these women that should they invite someone to attempt completing the sphinx’s number of tasks, they would be doomed to subsequently decease. (Otherwise, if not having invited anyone, the women could simply live normal lives and decease of a natural cause)
This rule was set in place so that people would not be able to return to the Fakhtory-inviter with the hope of getting another visit to the sphinx.
It is impossible for people to visit the visit the Eternal Sphinx without an invite. |
